My role: intern – handle development, button layout and detail explorations. Cough Assist is a noninvasive therapy that safely and consistently removes secretions in patients with an ineffective ability to cough. It clears secretions by gradually applying a positive pressure to the airway, then rapidly shifting to negative pressure. The rapid shift in pressure produces a high expiratory flow, simulating a natural cough. Typical Cough Assist patients include those with Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, Muscular dystrophy, Myasthenia gravis, Spinal cord injuries, Post- polio Cough Assist is a good example of a product that travels from a hospital to a home setting. The original Cough Assist was 25 years old without a redesign. The team carefully observed users contexts and behaviors. The new design is substantially lighter, can be carried by a wheel chair, and features a full color UI. The color strategy aims at de- stigmatizing the device with the use of warm approachable color and form.
